 To All Members and interested parties,


 Greeting in the name of Christ Jesus, our Lord.  It is with great joy I write this letter to you on behalf of the AEA Board, trusting it will find you in good health and spirit.


 At our last General Council meeting held in Addis, the Board was mandated to embark on the recruitment of the General Secretary and the Search Committee is now in place to receive applications from qualified candidates. 

Attached, please find a comprehensive list of requirements and job description for the position of General Secretary.  Our request to you is to publicise this among your members and prayerfully send us names and contact details of possible candidates you consider appropriately suited for this task and we will get in touch with them.  The closing date for applications is December, 21st 2008.

AEA GENERAL SECRETARY PROFILE

 

- An Executive Summary –

 

Preamble

 

The Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA) as a Movement uniting evangelical churches, mission agencies and para-church organizations was born in February 1966. It is committed to making disciples and advancing the Kingdom of God throughout Africa. As of AD 2001, it commands a membership of over 70 million believers in 47 African nations.

Its vision is to unite evangelicals in Africa for holistic ministries that will make a difference.

 

Position Description

 

The General Secretary is the Chief Executive Officer and the Team Leader of the Movement. The primary function of the General Secretary is two-fold:

·         To lead the Movement to greater heights.

 

·         To provide management oversight for its ministry Commissions, their projects, the branch offices, and the Nairobi-based Headquarters.

 

Personality Traits

 

As a team leader of a Christian movement, the General Secretary of AEA must be characterized by the following traits:

 

·         Christ-likeness:     a life controlled, led, guided, and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

A life of obedience and humble submission to God.

 

·         Conviction:           adherence to the inspiration and trustworthiness of the Bible as

God’s word, and an acceptance of AEA’s Statement of Faith.

 

·         Character:              bearing the composite fruit of the Spirit, namely: love, joy, peace,

patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Gal. 5:22-23). A person of integrity.

 

·         Capability:             able to display high energy and a large capacity to perform.

Blessed with good health.

 

·         Courage                 Capacity to face challenges, accept responsibility, and forge ahead.

 

·         Compassion:          possessing passion for souls and for believers’ unity; able to bridge       

denominational divides.

 

·         Commitment:        a person of vision and focus; a committed Christian called of God

to the AEA mission.

 

Personal Qualifications

 

* Spiritual:                  one with a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord; maintains a consistent spiritual growth through regular Bible study, prayer, and witness; and an healthy local church membership and involvement.

 

* Social:                      one who is above reproach, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money, a team leader, manages own family well (where married), and not a recent convert.

 

* Scholarship:             a student of the Word with an understanding of contemporary cultural, socio-political, moral and theological issues of the world in general and Africa in particular. One who is a clear thinker and a good communicator. A formal theological education up to a master’s   level minimum will be an advantage.


 


Leadership-Management Tasks



 

As a team leader, the General Secretary is expected to:

·         provide vision

 

·         plan for growth: setting goals and using resources wisely.

 

·         pioneer new ministries e.g. new Fellowships

 

·         promote teamwork: investing in people, inspiring, empowering, and delegating responsibility cum authority.

 

·         Perform funds development

 

·         Pave the way for a successor

 

As a manager, the General Secretary is expected to: 

·         ensure that records and documents are kept

 

·         ensure that accurate financial records are kept and the books are audited by external auditors                                                                                                                        

 

·         coordinate the Movement’s continental operations and offices

 

·         maintain strong staff morale

 

·         strengthen the spiritual vitality and financial health of the Movement.

 

·         at least be bi-lingual (English and French)

 

Specific Constitutional Duties

 

These are taken from AEA By-Laws, Article V H of the new constitution

 

1.                  To execute through the Headquarters’ machinery the policies and resolutions of the Board and to report to the Board.

 

2.                  To preserve the Association’s seal, official records and historical documents.

 

3.                  To handle official correspondence to and from Headquarters

 

4.                  To coordinate the activities of the various Ministries of the Association.

 

5.                  To receive reports of the Commissions and Program Executives, and chair the meetings of the Leaderships Team.

 

6.                  To attend or be represented at meetings of the Commissions, the Projects and National Fellowships’ Annual General Meetings whenever possible.

 

7.                  To send our periodically to all members newsletter and prayer bulletins and other publications.

 

8.                  To employ within the limitation of the budget and in consultation with Board, whenever necessary, any necessary assistance to carry our the purpose of the Association.

 

9.                  To uphold the constitution and By-Laws at all times and perform any other duties assigned to this office by the same documents and as may be assigned by the Board from time to time.

 

10.              To serve as a godly example to the public in general and the Christian community in particular.

 

Reporting

 

The General Secretary reports to the Executive Board of AEA through its Chairman.
